The Introduction of Center for Studies of Media Development, Wuhan University

1.  Brief Introduction

        Centre for Studies of Media Development of Wuhan University, founded in July, 2002, was recomposed of Journalism Research Center（Oct.,1985）, Center for Studies of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan News（Sept.,1990）, and Haide Communication Study Center. WHU（Apr.,2002）. The Center was authorized as the Key Research Base of Humanities and Social Sciences of Ministry of Education in December, 2004. Professor Jinhai Zhang is the director of the Center now.
        The development goal of the center is to aim at the international academic front of media, to trace the realistic development of media in the world, to meet the actual needs of domestic media development, and to put the emphasis on solving the significant problems of theory and practice. The center also focuses on providing the theoretical and realistic bases for the government’s formulation of the media development policies and the strategies of the media development. Moreover, the center shoots at developing into a domestic authoritative research institute with the ability of international interlocution in three or five years, and it will spend eight or ten years to develop into an important international media research institute with loud voice and great influence in the field of media research.

2.  Main Research Fields

        Research Field One: Media Theory
        Main features: To focus on the studies of Chinese and western concepts of news communication, and to enrich the connotation of media theory research by extracting the valuable theoretical propositions; To embark from the interdisciplinary characteristic of media theory, and by making full use of the academic resources of humanities and social sciences of Wuhan University and other domestic universities, the center aims at establishing a three-dimensional analyzing model of the media development in multiple perspectives of cultural science, politics, sociology, economics, law and so on; To focus on the study of cross-cultural and comparative study of cross-regional media culture, and to build a comparative analyzing model of media theory research.

        Research Field Two: Media Strategy
        Main Features: To focus on domestic and foreign media systems, media policies, media laws and ethics; to search for the basic direction of media system reform according to the goal of constructing the Socialism with Chinese characteristics; to study China’s media policies since the PRC was founded, especially since the 1980s, and to focus on the research of communication law, Chinese journalism ethics and self-discipline, and the research of Chinese media development strategy in the background of globalization.

        Research Field Three: Media Economy
        Main Features: To solve the realistic problems of economic operation and development of media on the base of fundamental theory creation and the reality of media development in China; to reinforce the studies of media industrialization and media management; and to step further into the research of the characteristics of media economy, as well as the research of structural adjustment of modern information economy caused by the development of media economy.
