The Center for Studies of Media Development(CSMD) at Wuhan University is one of China’s leading academic institutes for media and communications and a Key Research Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences at Universities, Ministry of Education, P.R.C. Through innovation and communication, the CSMD strives to accrue knowledge, cultivate talent, and make distinguished contributions to the development of media and society.
History and Accolades
Formally established in July 2002, the CSMD has been at the forefront of its field for the last 16 years, and in 2004 was made a Key Research Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences by China’s Ministry of Education. In 2015 and 2016, the CSMD won prestigious awards for its outstanding contribution to media economics research. In 2018, the CSMD was selected as China Think Tank Index(CTTI) Source Think Tanks, and was awarded Top 100 University Think Tank of CTTI (Grade A), and has been described as a hub for innovative academic research.
Since its founding, the CSMD has built a team of talented international scholars, dedicated to tackling some of the toughest problems in media and communication today. Though distinct in focus, the research produced by CSMD’s community of 60 academics, all revolve around the pursuit of new paradigms in the field.
Specifically, the CSMD places strategic emphasis on five key areas of research;
1) Improving China’s communication capabilities;
2) The role of the internet in social governance (in both China and the West);
3) Innovation in Chinese news media in a new media environment;
4) Intercultural Communication and the “One Belt-One Road” initiative;
5) Innovation in China’s media and advertising industries;
To support the CSMD in exploring major issues surrounding the development of media and society, and to share its theoretical findings with the research community, it has published several books series, these include;
1) “The Relationship Between Journalism, Communication and Mediated Society”
2) “Research on the Relationship between Media Development and the Construction of Harmonious Society”
3) “Luojia Wendao Series (Media and Communication Studies)”
4) “News Communication: Problems and Methods”
5) “Intercultural Communication Research”
The CSMD strongly advocates that cutting-edge research be practical and applied with purpose. It seeks to integrate methodological insights from “on-the-scene” reporting into an academic research framework, thus providing a deeper understanding of the difficulties, doubts and talking points that define many major research topics. Such methodological cross-fertilization allows the CSMD’s academics to unearth the often unseen issues that accompany the development of media and society, whilst at the same time, to seek out original research approaches to Chinese communication. The investigative insights produced by the CSMD can be found in the following regular research reports, “Annual Report of China’s Communication Innovation” and “Research Report of China’s Media Development”.
In addition to delivering high quality research, the CSMD is committed to academic outreach through constructing communication platforms, convening symposia and fostering dialogue between highly renowned research centres and media companies.
As a key participant in the Chinese University Think Tank Union, the CSMD organizes meetings between research institutes from China’s western provinces. Together, scholars can gather and discuss smart solutions to region-specific cultural communication issues.
Furthermore, the international orientation of the CSMD means that it actively seeks to work with Belt and Road nations think-tanks, as well as deepen its connections with institutes further afield. Currently, the CSMD frequently engages in bilateral academic discussions and cooperative endeavours with a variety of well-respected organizations. In order to further its outreach and exchange goals, the CSMD regularly hosts a number of conferences and forums, most notably; the “International Conference on Intercultural Communication” (ICIC) , the “Comparative Communication Study International Symposium”(CCSIS), and the “Forum on Communication Innovation in China”.
When convening in person becomes an issue, the CSMD implements a practicality protocol which ensures long-term, sustainable academic dialogue. By harnessing the power of cloud technology, the CSMD is able to host a number of regular online conferences. The integration of smart technology into scholarly exchange means the CSMD can bring renowned international scholars “into” the research institute on a regular basis.
The CSMD is a people-orientated centre for academic development and allocates a significant amount of resources into talent-cultivation. The CSMD adopts a multifaceted training initiative, designed to maximize the potential of each of all of the students and faculty. The CSMD training model includes the annual intercultural communication camp held in Gothenburg, Sweden; weekly reading groups, doctoral forums and a variety of smart teaching methods catered to the requirements of the individual.
The CSMD has strong professional relations with various media organizations and helps to provide theoretical guidance in areas such as media research, data mining, employee training, strategy, and other areas. It is the theoretical support of the CSMD that allows our partners to truly excel in China’s media market.
